Leaves of Grass

Many critics criticize Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. The Boston Intelligencer condemned his poetry as full of “bombast, egotism, vulgarity and nonsense". A few critics wanted Whitman to be punished. He deserves “the lash for such a violation of decency”. It is beyond comprehension why some of the critics called Leaves of Grass a dirty book. We should remember that both R.W. Emerson and Thoreau admired his poetry. Thoreau aptly remarked: “He has spoken more truth than any American or modern that I know. Santosh Kumar: Santosh Kumar (b. 1946) is a poet, short-story writer and an editor from UP India; DPhil in English; member of World Poets Society (W.P.S.); member of World Haiku Association, Japan; presented papers in the seminar at Oslo, Norway in September 2008; read his poetry in Lithuania 2009. He has also edited sixteen World Poetry Anthologies, and four books of World’s Great Short Stories. W. B. Yeats' Most Powerful Poem

Where is the Short Story? Why did E.M. Forster Stop Writing Fiction? The triumph of Matter over Spirit , two world wars, the postmodern machine society-all these seem to have shut “the door which leads to soul”. Hannah Arendt in The Human Condition aptly criticizes the modern age : “ It is quite inconceivable that the modern age-which began with such an unprecedented and promising outburst of human activity-may end in the deadliest, most sterile passivity history has ever known.” The problem for the short-story writer in this milieu is how to write stories which have genuine emotional depth, and directness in the presentation of situations. Short Story Facts We find in the contemporary short stories an extraordinary quality of characterization, dialogue and situation. Several of these stories reveal the tense moments leading to an apt climax. The violence appearing as predominant theme in some short-story writers is not surprising, because our planet is now almost accustomed to the sinister storms of terror, nuclear war, moral and sexual depravity in all walks of life. In a few stories , we find the authors demanding freedom not of principles but of instincts, a freedom to live in ‘a lawless universe where the only master is the inordinate energy of desire’ (Albert Camus, The Rebel ). These short stories are ‘charmingly unexpected, and unexpectedly charming’. What is extraordinary is that these authors are at the peak of their style-unpolished, vigorous, terse and suggestive.
