Santosh Kumar: Santosh Kumar (b. 1946) is a poet, short-story writer and an editor from UP India; DPhil in English; member of World Poets Society (W.P.S.); member of World Haiku Association, Japan; presented papers in the seminar at Oslo, Norway in September 2008; read his poetry in Lithuania 2009. He has also edited sixteen World Poetry Anthologies, and four books of World’s Great Short Stories. He is also the author of a collection of poems entitled Helicon,Haiku collection New Utopia, NO NUKES: Brave New World of Beauty, A Long Narrative Poem, Songs of Peace & Haiku,Critical Essays in collaboration with Adam Donaldson Powell.He has also edited The Poetic Achievement of Ban'ya Natsuishi.

William Blake's use of Symbols

Symbolism in poetry developed out of the Dada activities of World War I , and the most important center of the symbolist poets was Paris . Even before the modern age, the visionary poet Blake used symbols in his poetry. Shakespeare is the greatest poet of the world. His most famous plays are Macbeth, King Lear, Hamlet, Julius Caesar, Othello, Romeo and Juliet, Twelfth Night, As You Like It, The Comedy of Errors, Much Ado About Nothing, Richard II, The Winter’s Tale, Cymbeline . Ben Jonson admired him in the following lines: Soul of the age! The applause! delight! the wonder of our stage! Spenser's Sweet Melodious sound

Spenser’s masterpiece Fairy Queen is an exraordinary allegory. Dryden aptly remarks about Spenser: “ No man was ever born with a greater genius or more knowledge to support it”. He has been rightly described as the ‘poets’ poet’ as Shakespeare, Wordsworth, Shelley, Keats, Tennyson, the Pre-Raphaelites, and other numberless poets were immensely influenced by him. Spenser was able to finish only six books of the epic, though his aim was to write twelve books. Spenser’s ‘sweet melodios sound’ was admired even by Shakespeare. Wordsworth aptly described him “Sweet Spenser, moving, through his clouded heaven / With the moon’s beauty and moon’s soft pace”. Spenser was aware of twelve virtues described by Aristotle that are indispensable to make an ideal person. By what means is this attainable? Leaves of Grass

Many critics criticize Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. The Boston Intelligencer condemned his poetry as full of “bombast, egotism, vulgarity and nonsense". A few critics wanted Whitman to be punished. He deserves “the lash for such a violation of decency”. It is beyond comprehension why some of the critics called Leaves of Grass a dirty book. We should remember that both R.W. Emerson and Thoreau admired his poetry. Thoreau aptly remarked: “He has spoken more truth than any American or modern that I know.
