September 12, 2010

A Poem of the Earth's Last Days for Terry Collett, Richard Lynn Livesay, Rene Allen, wendy c. i. That beast wretched Blame the foul monster With distaste for love It’s Satan’s terror o’er all earth Furious with His incarnation Invents new strategy for nuclear war New weapons, new nuclear plants New operative plans empowering extremist nations Where terrorism is a divine signal Where the young suicide bombers are brainwashed A blow to the lamb. No. ii. Now Christ thee save, Thou reverent believer! I pray, O Lord Let not the Devil kill The faithful with truest heart Let no radiation paralyze them iii. Our lord won’t allow extinction of earth In one moment millions will disappear The sun and moon will be darkened As we have sinned And divine wrath will devour us In such tribulation Prince of Peace Coming on the clouds of heaven Protects the faithful and believers All were swept away By the...

Danoski's 'Mansion of Madness'

August 23, 2010

Danoski's 'Mansion of Madness' (SHOCK WAVES:Letters from the Edge Published by Vantage Press, New York, 1987, pp. 55, $6.95 ISBN 0-533-07281-6, Hardback) Shock Waves: Letters From The Edge is Joseph V. Danoski’s first collection of poems, under his pen name, Jonathan Konrad. The poems reveal ‘the strange and inverted world’ of Danoski, ‘poet of the nuclear age’. The first poem, and one of finest in this collection, describes that the poet is “a stranger with stranger ways”: I’m the most charming of charmers When people play the game I say, Or a soldier in my armor- Standing so close yet so far away (“The Dead of Night”, p. 1) Some of the most striking effects and shock waves the poet creates through subtle incongruities: Let us live the living night, Do the dance of dark delight: Give your life To live the rite Of the living night! (“The Rite of the Living Night”, p. 5) Danoski’s “Mansion of Madness” is blended “with gardens of grandeur”. The poet is ...

Faith for Living

August 27, 2010

Faith for Living "An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."- Luke 2:9-12; 13-14 i. The Holy Spirit came down upon the Prince of peace And the top of heaven opened Thus anointed and seized by sacred power He was ready To die & be an infallible human sacrifice. Visible to his disciples after his resurrection Jesus became one mediator and a future ransom For the human society Having subjects from all ends of the planet. ii. Imparting life to the perishing world Even to the dead by calling them out of their Tombs and graves Christ spoke: Hear, oh hear, suicide terrorists and war-mongers! Only the righ...

Leaves of Grass

Many critics criticize Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. The Boston Intelligencer condemned his poetry as full of “bombast, egotism, vulgarity and nonsense". A few critics wanted Whitman to be punished. He deserves “the lash for such a violation of decency”. It is beyond comprehension why some of the critics called Leaves of Grass a dirty book. We should remember that both R.W. Emerson and Thoreau admired his poetry. Thoreau aptly remarked: “He has spoken more truth than any American or modern that I know. I have found his poem exhilarating, encouraging.” Take for example the following lines: I know that the hand of God is the promise of my own, And I know that the spirit of God is the brother of my own, And that all the men ever born are also my brothers, and the women my sisters and lovers, And that a kelson of the creation is love. What a magnificent, sharp, noble and clear thought! The lines show a force of Whitman’s originality and spiritual observance. The beauties...

Charles Dickens is among the Classics.

George Samson aptly remarks that like Shakespeare, Dickens has conquered the world. This is absolutely true about his immortal novel David Copperfield. This novel reveals Dickens’ conviction-‘a belief in the paramount value of the primary, simple, benevolent impulses of man, his instinctive wish to love love and laugh, give and share’. The most remarkable quality of his novels is his humor. R. C. Churchill rightly comments” “In the field of comedy, I put Dickens above Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, Fielding and Smollett.” Priestley too says that Dickens “made more people laugh than the sum total of authors in several literatures.” Dickens has created immortal characters in this novel. The major characters in this novel are David Copperfield, Uriah Heep, Betsey, Mr. Micawber and Miss Clara Peggotty. Mr. Micawber is an immortal character like Shakespeare’s Falstaff and Cervantes’ Don Quixote. The novel includes autobiographical element. David is Charles Dickens himself. Mr. and Mrs. Micawber r...
