Danoski's 'Mansion of Madness'

August 23, 2010

Danoski's 'Mansion of Madness' (SHOCK WAVES:Letters from the Edge Published by Vantage Press, New York, 1987, pp. 55, $6.95 ISBN 0-533-07281-6, Hardback) Shock Waves: Letters From The Edge is Joseph V. Danoski’s first collection of poems, under his pen name, Jonathan Konrad. The poems reveal ‘the strange and inverted world’ of Danoski, ‘poet of the nuclear age’. The first poem, and one of finest in this collection, describes that the poet is “a stranger with stranger ways”: I’m the most charming of charmers When people play the game I say, Or a soldier in my armor- Standing so close yet so far away (“The Dead of Night”, p. 1) Some of the most striking effects and shock waves the poet creates through subtle incongruities: Let us live the living night, Do the dance of dark delight: Give your life To live the rite Of the living night! (“The Rite of the Living Night”, p. 5) Danoski’s “Mansion of Madness” is blended “with gardens of grandeur”. The poet is ...

"The Wisest, the Brightest and the Meanest of Mankind"

Francis Bacon was not only one of the greatest writers, but also a great English statesman, philosopher and politician. The great classical poet Alexander Pope regarded him as “the wisest, the brightest and the meanest of mankind”. Bacon is the Father of English essay. His essays are famous for their wit and aphoristic style. Most of the lines from his essays have always been acclaimed as immortal quotes. For example, we may take the following lines that have become proverbs: Revenge is a kind of wild justice; which the more man's nature runs to, the more ought law to weed it out. Wives are young men's mistresses, companions for middle age, and old men's nurses. In charity there is no excess. Read not to contradict and confute; nor to believe and take for granted; nor to find talk and discourse; but to weigh and consider. Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested : that is, some books are to be read only in ...

William Blake's use of Symbols

Symbolism in poetry developed out of the Dada activities of World War I , and the most important center of the symbolist poets was Paris . Even before the modern age, the visionary poet Blake used symbols in his poetry. For example, in his lyric "The Lamb", we find that the lamb is a symbol of Christ: Little Lamb I'll tell thee, Little Lamb I'll tell thee: He is called by thy name, For he calls himself a Lamb: He is meek & he is mild, He became a little child: I a child & thou a lamb, We are called by his name. Little Lamb God bless thee. Little Lamb God bless thee. The lamb is an apt symbol for the Prince of Peace Jesus. The poet uses another symbol in the above lines. Jesus is like "a little child". Jesus is simple, humble, innocent and sinless like a child. William Blake himself remarked: " A symbol is the only possible expression of some invisible essence." From the...

Irreverent Criticism of John Keats

negative capability, John Keats (1795-1821), one of the greatest Romantic poets who is often compared with Shakespeare due to his phrases charged with a great intensity of imagination, was vehemently criticized by John Gibson Lockhart in Blackwoods Magazine: ““The phrenzy of the “Poems” was bad enough in its way; but it did not alarm us half so seriously as the calm, settled, imperturbable drivelling idiocy of Endymion.” This vituperative and utterly irreverent criticism was quite unjustified. We should not forget that Keats wrote some of the greatest odes, comparable to nothing except Shakespeare’s greatest poetry . One example is the concluding lines of Ode on a Grecian Urn” ‘Beauty is truth, truth beauty’ – that is all / you know on earth, and all ye need to know”. Keats is a Shakespearean poet due to his ‘negative capability’. Keats himself remarks about this ‘negative capability’: ” Several things dovetailed in my mind, and at once it struck me, what quality went to ...

Faith for Living

August 27, 2010

Faith for Living "An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."- Luke 2:9-12; 13-14 i. The Holy Spirit came down upon the Prince of peace And the top of heaven opened Thus anointed and seized by sacred power He was ready To die & be an infallible human sacrifice. Imparting life to the perishing world Even to the dead by calling them out of their Tombs and graves Christ spoke: Hear, oh hear, suicide terrorists and war-mongers! Only the righ...

Jane Austen's Comedy of Human Nature

The most famous novels by Jane Austen, one of the greatest novelists in the world of literature, are Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Northanger abbey, Mansfield Park, Emma, and Persuasion. Pride and Prejudice has always been my favorite. The most predominant theme in Pride and prejudice is love and matrimony. The opening lines of Pride and Prejudice are most famous, and strike the keynote of the novel: “ "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." These lines are spoken by Mrs. Bennet to her husband Mr. Bennet. Mrs. Bennet desires to find suitable husbands for her five daughters. The popularity of the novel is substantiated by the fact that it has sold about 20 million copies across the globe. It is not possible to agree with Charlotte Bronte’s violent criticism of the novel: “ I haven’t any right to criticize books, and I don’t do it except when I hate them. I often want to criticize J...
