Short Story Facts

Short Story Facts We find in the contemporary short stories an extraordinary quality of characterization, dialogue and situation. Several of these stories reveal the tense moments leading to an apt climax. The violence appearing as predominant theme in some short-story writers is not surprising, because our planet is now almost accustomed to the sinister storms of terror, nuclear war, moral and sexual depravity in all walks of life.  In a few stories , we find the authors demanding freedom not of principles but of instincts, a freedom to live in ‘a lawless universe where the only master is the inordinate energy of desire’ (Albert Camus, The Rebel ). These short stories are ‘charmingly unexpected, and unexpectedly charming’. What is extraordinary is that these authors are at the peak of their style-unpolished, vigorous, terse and suggestive. In several stories, we notice the use of satire, but it is a gentle criticism of contemporary life and manners, devoid of any contempt or mali

Santa’s Letter to Liza

In expressing your affection to me and warm invitation to visit your house during Christmas.Your letter was unsurpassable. I’m sending you two poems. Please read, and tell this to your parents and grandpa: Two ultimate laws alone we know,   The ledger and the sword -- So far away, so long ago, We lost the infant Lord. Only the children clasp His hand; His voice speaks low to them, And still for them the shining band Wings over Bethlehem. -Ogden Nash Yet the hearts must childlike be Where such heavenly guests abide: Unto children, in their glee, All the year is Christmas-tide! Thus, forgetting tricks and play For a moment, Lady dear, We would wish you,

The Three Most Important Features of Modern Poetry

The Three Most Important Features of Modern Poetry      1. DISILLUSIONMENT   The great depth of contemporary poetry is evident in the poems by Robert Frost, Wallace Stevens, T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Marianne Moore, e. e. cummings, Robinson Jeffers, H. D. (Hilda Doolittle), Robert Graves, W. H. Auden, Archibald MacLeish, Basil Bunting, Robert Lowell, Philip Larkin, Stephen Spender, and others. . The modernity of   these poets    is revealed by the artist’s failure in a society quite indifferent and callous to poetry. The disillusionment and predicament of a poet was truly described in Pound’s Hugh Selwyn Mauberley : “His true Penelope was Flaubert. \ He fished by obstinate isles.” The artist’s private break-down and disintegration was very aptly shown by T. S. Eliot in The Waste Land :            On Margate Sands,            I can connect             Nothing with nothing.           The broken fingernails of dirty hands,           My people humble people who expect           Nothing.

Poetry and 'a continual extinction of personality'

Poetry and 'a continual extinction of personality'   Poetry, like other arts, produces a unique joy through an artistic creation of beauty. To such artistic creation each great poet  brings a freshness and individuality that give the poems an original place in world poetry. Poets differ in their moods; spring is "the cruelest month" for T.S. Eliot. On the contrary April is energetic and cheerful for Chaucer in Prologue to The Canterbury Tales . But it may be remembered that a poet should write without interruption from the intrusion of his personal peculiarities. Arnold calls the artist "most fortunate, when he most entirely succeeds in effacing himself." "The progress of an artist is a continual extinction of personality" (T.S. Eliot).                 If the poets follow T.S. Eliot's dictum, and keep their personality away during the moments of composing the poems, they may well become the idols of intellectuals; some might become immortal l

What’s Wordsworth’s Healing Power?

What’s Wordsworth’s Healing Power? Time may restore us in his course Goethe’s sage mind and Byron’s force; But where will Europe’s latter hour Again find Wordsworth’s healing power? -Matthew Arnold, “Memorial Verses” (1852) The most popular feature of the poetry of Wordsworth (1770-1850) , the greatest of the Romantic poets revealing ‘the union of deep feeling with profound thought’ ( Coleridge), is its healing power. In his “Tintern Abbey”, the poet’s meditation starts about beautiful landscape near Tintern abbey where he returns after five years: Once again Do I behold these steep and lofty cliffs, That on a wild secluded scene impress Thoughts of more deep seclusion; and connect The landscape with the quiet of the sky. Wordsworth makes it evident in this poem that the objects of nature fill us with pure joy. We can get peace of mind, “that serene and blessed mood” only in the world of nature. In his epic The Prelude, his spiritual autobiography, th

LITERARY FACTS

LITERARY FACTS This article includes some of my favorite events in the literary history. We can learn a lot from these facts. They at times stir us to the quick and convince us about the values of the biographical details of the author. Both Sartre and Pasternak declined the Nobel Prize. This literary fact has always been my favorite. Samuel Beckett refused to attend the Nobel prize ceremony. Samuel Beckett was obsessed by a desire to create what he called "a literature of the unword." Issa's mother died when he was three years old. e.e.cummings was inspired to write Santa Clause: A Morality after uniting with his daughter, Nancy. French poet Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891) produced his best works while still in his late teens. He gave up creative writing before he reached 21. Ikkyu (b. 1394), famous monk poet, was the illegitimate son of Emperor Go-Komatsu. Katherine Mansfield who married Middleton Murry in 1918 died of tuberculosis in January 1923, aged on

Four Most Tragic Incidents 2005

Four Most Tragic Incidents 2005 I experienced an ineffable dejection when Tsunami Terror and waves of destruction killed so many innocent children and women in southern India. Countless dead bodies lay on the beaches as more than 130,000 people died. This was the country's worst natural disaster. The question is if a poor country like India can afford an early warning system to detect such earthquakes so that the tragic history may not be repeated. The whole world felt: A grief without a pang, void, dark, and drear, A stifled, drowsy, unimpassioned grief, Which finds no natural outlet, no relief, In word, or sigh, or tear. Coleridge, "DEJECTION: AN ODE" The death of the Pope left the world's 1.1 billion Roman Catholics lonely and unhappy. He exuded true passion for universal love and peace. The Variety and Richness in Branch Redd Review issue 6

The Variety and Richness in Branch Redd Review issue 6 Literary Journal by Bill Sherman (Edited & published by Bill Sherman, Branch Redd Books, USA, 2002, pp 80, £5/$10. ISBN 0-9615784-8-3) BRR edited & published by Bill Sherman is one of the most admirable literary Journals. It is marked by genuine autobiographical touches. Sherman has brought to his Journal a wide experience of literature, sincere sympathies, and a rich sense of humour. Sherman is unhappy due to lack of public interest in the English translations of the poetry of Dagny Juel, along with " the deep feminist introduction" by the translator, Norwegian poet Hanne Bramness. As I came to know that the issue Number 6 would be the last one, I wrote to Sherman that such highly accomplished quality Journals deserved more publications. The Journal is highly informative. For example, we are told about Pound's insistence that the "hyacinth girl" in Eliot's The Waste La
